A gnomon magic square is a 4x4 magic square where besides the rows,
columns and diagonals adding up to the magic constant (34), the four
corner groups or quadrants add up to it as well. Dürer’s magic square is
part of an engraving named Melancholia I made by Albrecht Dürer in 1514.
The fascinating thing about this magic square is that on the bottom row,
the middle two numbers are 15 and 14, indicating the date of the
engraving. In addition to it being a gnomon 4x4 magic square, its center
square also sums to 34 and it is an
associative magic square.
